This is part 22 of a series exploring how the Bible teaches that Jesus was greater than all who came before him. This series is not intended to be exhaustive. The topic of Jesus as “greater than” or “better” than those who came before him is inexhaustible. Libraries could and should be written on this subject. But we have attempted in these pages to explore what such a rich subject would look like. (Each entry is excerpted from There Is No Greater Love)
Christ Greater than Abraham
So Abraham called the name of that place “The Lord will Provide,” just as it is said, “Today, in the mount of the LORD, it shall be provided” (Gen 22:14).
“Surely you are not greater than Abraham, who died, and the prophets, who died. Whom do you understand yourself to be?” … “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day! He saw it and rejoiced” (John 8:53, 56).
The Jews who opposed Jesus challenged His claim of having power over death by noting that all of the prophets before Him had died and even Abraham had died. Certainly, they imagined, Jesus too must be subject to death. For if He truly could overcome death that would make Him greater than all the prophets and greater even than Abraham.
Jesus answered them by responding that, just as Abraham had seen Isaac delivered from God’s decree of death on the third day (Gen 22:4), so He too would be raised on the third day (John 2:19, 21). Abraham rejoiced that Isaac had been restored to him as though from the dead (Heb 11:17-19). That day which Abraham foresaw (Gen 22:14)—the day when God would provide for Himself a lamb for the sacrifice (Gen 22:8)—was the day of Jesus’ resurrection. If all the prophets died and if even Abraham died, Jesus was raised from the dead with a greater glory than Abraham and all of the prophets. We too, as Abraham’s seed by faith, rejoice in hope of that great day!
