This is part 15 of a series exploring how the Bible teaches that Jesus was greater than all who came before him. This series is not intended to be exhaustive. The topic of Jesus as “greater than” or “better” than those who came before him is inexhaustible. Libraries could and should be written on this subject. But we have attempted in these pages to explore what such a rich subject would look like. (Each entry is excerpted from There Is No Greater Love)
Christ Greater than Noah
Now Noah drank of the wine and became drunk and lay uncovered in his tent (Gen 9:21).
She (Eve) took of its fruit and ate, and she gave to her husband (Adam) with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew they were naked (Gen 3:6-7).
Sin brings a curse. Adam sinned by eating and brought a curse upon the ground in the old heavens and earth (Gen 3:17). Noah sinned by drinking and brought a curse upon Canaan in the present heavens and earth (Gen 9:25). So it is wonderful that Jesus, who Himself suffered hunger (Matt 4:2) and thirst (John 19:28) for our salvation, would restore us by the very means Adam and Noah fell, that is, by eating and drinking. Jesus offers us the bread and wine that we might eat and drink to the glory of God (1 Cor 10:31). Eve sinned when she “took and ate” and became naked in her shame. Noah sinned when he “drank” and likewise became shamefully naked. But Jesus invites all of us to “take and eat” and “drink” from His table, for His righteousness covers all our nakedness. Jesus takes the verbs of our destruction (“take and eat” as well as “drink”) and makes them the verbs of our salvation (Matt 26:26; 1 Cor 11:25-26). What a Savior!
